She looks to succeed Sen. Mark Miller who announced retirement Tuesday
Dane County State Rep. Melissa Sargent formally declared her candidacy for State Senate in the 16th District, she said in Wednesday morning announcement and video clip.
Incumbent Mark Miller, D-Monona, said in Tuesday floor speech in the Senate chambers that he would not seek another term this November after 16 years in the upper house and six years prior in the Assembly. Sargent said she knew Miller was nearing an announcement about retiring and spoke to him on Monday about her intention to seek the post.
Representing the 48th District for the past seven years, Sargent is also a former two-term member of the Dane County Board of Supervisors.

According to her announcement, Sargent “…owned a small business and worked in the private sector.” She resides in Madison’s northside neighborhood.
Former state representative and gubernatorial candidate Kelda Roys told UpNorthNews she is considering a run for the Senate seat as well.
