BUDGET DEAL REACHED – Gov. Tony Evers and Republicans controlling the Legislature announced an agreement on a new state budget early Tuesday morning. The two-year plan will boost funding for K-12 and higher education and use some of the state surplus to provide $1.3 billion in income tax relief and support affordable childcare.
The full Assembly and Senate could vote on the measure yet this week, but Sen. Jeff Smith (D-Eau Claire) is among those who aren’t committing to support the measure until they’ve read it all—reflecting the distrust that exists after Republicans made drastic cuts in their original proposal compared to what Gov. Evers originally proposed.
