Communities across Wisconsin are celebrating Black History Month with events that highlight culture, creativity, and connection.
Feb. 1 marked the start of Black History Month, an annual celebration of the imperative contributions and achievements that Black individuals have accomplished throughout history. Here are some ways you can celebrate in Wisconsin:
Celebrate Black Culture, Green Bay (Feb. 1 – March 1)
Throughout the month of February, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will feature multiple campus programs celebrating the history, culture, and contributions of people of African descent in the US, including the arts, health, and more.
Black Herstory and Black History Month Celebration Expo, Beloit (Feb. 14)
This event celebrates Black herstory and history through area entrepreneurs showcasing local small businesses, cultural performances, food, and more.
BSU: Reflections of Ebony, La Crosse (Feb. 14)
This annual celebration organized by The Black Student Unity at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse highlights Black excellence and community with keynote speakers, local live jazz music, international eats, and more.
Minding My Black-Owned Business Pop-Up Shop, Madison (Feb. 21)
More than 30 local Black- and Brown-owned small businesses will offer their products for sale in the Elver Mark Neighborhood Center to honor Black and Brown entrepreneurship for Black History Month.
Black History Month Paint & Sip, Milwaukee (Feb. 22)
Combining art and culture, this event provides a social setting where participants can sip drinks and paint within a space that fosters and celebrates community.
Wisconsin Black Advocacy Day, Madison (Feb. 26)
Held annually at the state capitol, this free event is organized by the Wisconsin Legislative Black Caucus and community partners to address issues facing the Black community. It will include workshops, policy discussions, and conversations with legislators, and more.
Afro Hair Fair, Appleton (Feb. 28)
This event celebrates Black beauty, culture, and education around afro-textured hair types with barber and stylist demonstrations, product education, hands-on workshops, and more.
